2020 is a year that is going to go down in history… not because it is the start of the decade, but for the first time in history the world has pretty much come to a standstill. Borders are closed, businesses are closed, the shops are empty and LIVE VENUES ARE CLOSED. Which means no gigs for our musicians and all the music lovers out there. So what happens to us now? Now, that we’re left to our own devices at home with too much time to think and not enough things to do. It can be easy to fall into a state of depression, to feel unmotivated… to turn into an actual potato. But I’m here to say. NO! you will not become a potato. You will get out of this isolation with zero potato vibes in sight. I have very kindly curated a list of things you can do to get you out of your bed and back into life!
Here are my top 5 tips!
1. Limit you media consumption and put your phone down every once in a while.
It’s a slippery slope. One second you think you’re just watching a funny TikTok. Then all of a sudden you have a cramped neck, with 4 hours missing from your life… put it down.
2. Create a daily routine.
It doesn’t need to be fancy, just enough to tell your body it’s time to start your day. With so many of us working and studying from home it can be pretty easy to lose the structure that physically going to work/school provides. We might not realise it, but this structure helps to keep our brains organised too. So even if it’s just a few simple tasks a day. You will feel a little bit more accomplished and a little less potato like by the end of it.
3. Stay connected to family and friends.
We are so lucky to live in a world of technology that allows us to stay connected during this time. If you’re feeling a bit meh and you’re not quite sure why, reach out to a friend or family member. Sometimes human interaction goes a long way when we’ve been stuck in our own heads for too long. Try apps like House Party and the Messenger video chat games to make your catch ups even more fun!
4. Take up a creative hobby…
Or resume the one you started a year or two or ago out of impulse and is now collecting dust in the corner of your room. Now is the time!
5. Take care of your health.
This is the key step to escaping your potato-ism. Eat well, get enough sleep, meditate if you’re overwhelmed, exercise or at least move more than going to the kitchen to get food. Your body will thank you for it! Here’s a guided morning meditation that has helped me to get out of bed on many occasions. It’s a quick one and quite easy to follow if you’re a beginner. Give it a try:
Take care of yourselves and repeat after me – I am not a potato!
