We caught up with BOOM Radios own Kiara Thompson. You can hear Kiara on BOOM Radio on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7am for the Big Breakfast Show!
Here is what we talked about during our catch up earlier this week.
How would you describe your experience working at BOOM Radio and what are your favourite parts?
My personal experience working at Boom Radio has definitely been an eye-opening for me. It has taught me that there is always room for personal growth and no matter how quiet you think you may be there is always a voice behind you that is just waiting to be heard.
When I first start at the station I never thought that I would be where I am now! Throughout my time working with the our small team, we have had many memorable moments, But my personal favourites so far have been working with my co-hosts Tim and Scotty on an early morning show that we decided to broadcast for the floor for fun! My second favourite moment would be one of my days at the 2019 Perth Royal Show when all of the Interviews cancelled for our show due to bad weather, I ran around trying to organise content for the show only to come back soaking wet with two Cheesecake Icecreams for my On-air team to try! My lectures still don’t let me live down that day.
How has Corona virus affected the continuity of the station?
Due to COVID-19 the continuity of BOOM was effected in many different ways, obviously, we were no longer able to get into the station for our shows or create any of the content that we normally would. Although we were able to pull through as a team with many of us stepping up to create live streams on our Facebook page, Announcers taking over the Instagram for a day and using our website to make articles about things that we thought our audience would like.
What made you want to study and work in radio and what are your goals in the industry?
Growing up I had always had a passion for anything creatively inclined, spending most of my childhood learning Instruments, partaking in drama classes and putting on dance recitals in my living room! Although as a teenager it was something that I loved but never thought I would act on, thinking that I would most likely end up in an everyday office job.
Although things change in my last year of High school after a series of unfortunate events I finally got the wake-up call that I needed! I had always loved listening to the radio on long car rides and it’s always been a part of some of my favourite memories.
When I first decided to pursue radio as a career my goal was to be apart of the background helping organising events, sourcing Interviews and being a part of something bigger than myself. After being in this course for over a year now my goals in a way haven’t changed but expanded with more of a focus on not just being behind the scene but also having fun on-air and being the voice that you hear in the morning.
