Hi Everyone! My name is Nur and I am one of the team members here at Richmond Street Records. Over the last 5 weeks I have been running a little Facebook Live Stream project called “Home Sounds” on my music business page Chop Street Music Productions. In a world riddled with doom and gloom, especially in the music industry. I felt defeated by the cancellations of our live sound jobs and I really felt for my peers as I saw their gigs and income dwindling away. After crying a little (*a lot) I decided that I wanted to do something to allow these artists stay connected to their audiences and maybe even brighten up peoples isolated Sundays as they listen to live music from WA in their homes. Thus, Home Sounds was born….
It all began at the start of the term break when, like so many other music industry workers all of our live sound gigs were cancelled… shortly after our clients also started cancelling their studio bookings. I was sad, really sad. We have only just started our business and 2020 was supposed to be our year. I felt lost and had NO IDEA on how I could turn things around when all I heard about was the doom and gloom of the music industry during this time.
I decided to wipe my tears away and start thinking of other ways we can keep working with music. I messaged a few musician friends who I knew had lost gigs and asked if they wanted to do a live stream gig on Sunday (I gave them a whopping 6 days’ notice). Surprisingly, they all said yes and were happy to have an opportunity to pick up their instruments and perform. I was super excited to be organising a show again, but I had no idea how it would turn out and sincerely believed only one person would tune in and that person would be me. It was so important to me to give the artists a good experience as I knew they were feeling as defeated as I was feeling. So off I went, throwing my self into the deep end, determined to make this work.
Well, I had nothing to worry about. The first Home Sounds stream reached a whopping 14,300 people with 6,500 views! This was massive for my little page that only had 100 page likes before Home Sounds started. I realised that this was my calling during isolation! The artists had a great time, some even receiving tips through their PayPal.Me link and the viewers had an overwhelming positive reaction to our Sunday Session at home. So, I set out to do another one the next week and the next… Reaching out to West Aussie musicians every single week was nerve racking, but I found some amazing acts including some past and present North Metro TAFE students:
Leah Grant – Leah Grant (past student – Sound Production)
My Shadow and I – Jarrad Wheildon (past student – Sound Production)
My Shadow and I – David Petchell (current student – Sound Production)
Mirrors At the Arcarde – Edward Leis (past student – Sound Production)
Oceanique – Maddy and Jess Larkman (current students – Performance)
Daniel C – Ming (current student – performance)
We just finished up Home Sounds last week, with a total of 5 shows throughout the past 5 weeks. It was an amazing experience that saw a reach of over 64,000 people, over 24,000 views and an extra 300 likes on the Chop Street Music Productions Page. Not bad for our little page!

We were sad to see Home Sounds end but we are currently working on a new project that will combine live streaming with pre-recorded segments, live performances, interviews and much more.
