Albums You Should Check Out From The First Half of 2020!

By Dirk Street
Run The Jewels- RTJ4
RTJ4 is a triumph for Run The Jewels, but it also represents a tragedy for the United States. The fact that songs like Walking In The Snow were recorded over a year ago, but still contain lyrics about police brutality that are even more relevant today, is a sad reflection on the social and the political landscape plaguing the country.
“You so numb, you watch the cops choke out a man like me
Until my voice goes from a shriek to whisper, “I can’t breathe”
Angry, politically charged, and absolutely vital for 2020, RTJ4 is an essential listen for any hip hop fan this year.
Yves Tumor- Heaven to a Tortured Mind
It’s no coincidence Yves Tumor’s real last name is Bowie, as Heaven To a Tortured Mind channels an immense amount of David Bowie’s glam rock style and merges it Yves’ killer drum work and strange electronic textures. This is their most accessible work yet, and songs like Gospel For a New Century and Kerosene are strong contenders for the best singles of the year. If you’re looking for something a bit experimental that still remembers to keep things catchy and engaging throughout, Heaven For a Tortured Mind is a must.
Spacey Jane- Sunlight
Spacey Jane’s long awaited debut delivered in spades this year, proving that Fremantle is one of the best places in the world for indie rock right now. Sunlight is a great example of; If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. The album is absolutely loaded with incredibly catchy pop rock songs that are built to be absolutely belted during a festival. It’s a shame we’ll have to wait to hear most of these songs played live, but once they’re able to be fully unleashed onto the touring scene again, Spacey Jane are poised to take over not just Australia, but the rest of the world.
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever- Sideways to New Italy
Along with Spacey Jane, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are proving to the music world that Australia is a forced to be reckoned with in the Indie Rock scene. Their latest album is full of songs that are as impressive on a structural level as they are catchy, lead single Cars in Space initially plays itself off as a fairly straightforward song, before an incredible instrumental breakdown in the outro subverts all expectations set up earlier in the track. If you’re looking for one of the strongest indie rock/post punk releases of the year, look no further.
Charli XCX- How I’m Feeling Now
An album born directly from the COVID-19 pandemic, How I’m Feeling Now is a refinement of the trailblazing pop music Charli XCX has been pumping out over the last half a decade. The album was recorded in just over a month while Charli was locked down in her home studio in California, but the sheer amount of polish and fresh ideas throughout makes it feel like an album other pop artists would spend years to make. It’s an album that perfectly represents why Charli is one of the most unique and exciting pop artists in the music industry today.

RECONCILITATION WEEK OVERVIEW 2020

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) started as the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993 (the International Year of the World’s Indigenous Peoples) and was supported by Australia’s major faith communities. In 1996, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia’s first NRW.
In 2000, Reconciliation Australia was established to continue to provide national leadership on reconciliation. In the same year, approximately 300,000 people walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of NRW, to show their support for reconciliation.
Today, NRW is celebrated by businesses, schools and early learning services, organisations, and individuals Australia-wide. Hundreds of NRW events are held each year.
This year, Reconciliation Week was held between 27th of May to the 3rd of June 2020.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

Ready to figure out your social media marketing strategy but have no idea where to start, you’re not alone. Social Media is as complicated as it gets and not as straightforward as it used to be. That’s why we have put together a comprehensive guide to creating a social media marketing plan from scratch.
First off, make sure to create an account for the most popular social platforms. Today’s most popular platforms are Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and more.
Make sure all accounts are turned into business accounts if possible, so then you can keep track on engagements and add all business contact information.
Choose a name that fits to your brand/ business. Something that reflects who you are and what you do.
Make sure to have a display picture, it can be a photo of yourself or your brand logo. This is very important as it is one of the first things people look at when viewing your profile.
Have a great description. Inform every service you provide and skill sets. People want to know what you do and if they are hooked from the description, they might even send through a message or email for more information!
Post regularly! Nothing like having an empty profile for your audience to browse through. They want to see if you are active and keeping your followers in the loop constantly.
Follow relevant accounts as much as you can. This way, your page might appear on people’s feeds as ‘similar to this’ or ‘based on pages you follow’.
Hashtag and tag as much as possible. People will search hashtags and your post could appear to a new audience. When tagging accounts, it can come up on a new audience’s feed.
Even searching trendy hashtags yourself can keep you in the loop of the latest trends on social media and the real world.
Add all social media links on every platform.
Invite all your friends and their friends to follow your page.
Research and understand your target audience and know who your competition is. And last but not least, make sure to always create and curate engaging content!!

Violet Orange Talk “GIRLS!”
Violet Orange are a six piece 80’s inspired pop outfit who are heavily inspired from bands such as The Go Go’s, The Bangles and No Doubt. Original members Danielle Foote (lead vocals/keys), Michaela Francis (guitar/vocals), Tina Ha (bass/vocals) and Jordan Abel (drums) met at North Metropolitan TAFE in 2018 studying the Diploma in music performance. In 2019, the band grew as they met their brass section Ned Holland (trombone) and Matthew Knight (trumpet).
Since Violet Orange , they have been steadily climbing through the Perth music scene, grasping at any opportunities that arise for them such as; participation at WAMFest 2019, recording for the ‘Demo’s from Peel’ project and playing for Brisbane band ‘Shagrock’ for their WA tour, all whilst they were recording and releasing their debut EP ‘Fool Me Twice’.
Violet Orange were set to release their newest single ‘Girls!’ in March 2020, which is primarily written about working through the hardships of being a woman, and also about being yourself and not hiding from who you are. Given the topic of the tune, the band was planning to accompany the release with a show in April, which was to be based around the idea of all girl fronted bands, as well as partnership with female entrepreneurs of art stalls and raising revenue for the UN Woman Foundation. Unfortunately, due to the current crisis, their plans were halted, but the band are hoping to combine their efforts with their next release later in the year.

Catching Up with Kiara Thompson from BOOM Radio
We caught up with BOOM Radios own Kiara Thompson. You can hear Kiara on BOOM Radio on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7am for the Big Breakfast Show!
Here is what we talked about during our catch up earlier this week.
How would you describe your experience working at BOOM Radio and what are your favourite parts?
My personal experience working at Boom Radio has definitely been an eye-opening for me. It has taught me that there is always room for personal growth and no matter how quiet you think you may be there is always a voice behind you that is just waiting to be heard.
When I first start at the station I never thought that I would be where I am now! Throughout my time working with the our small team, we have had many memorable moments, But my personal favourites so far have been working with my co-hosts Tim and Scotty on an early morning show that we decided to broadcast for the floor for fun! My second favourite moment would be one of my days at the 2019 Perth Royal Show when all of the Interviews cancelled for our show due to bad weather, I ran around trying to organise content for the show only to come back soaking wet with two Cheesecake Icecreams for my On-air team to try! My lectures still don’t let me live down that day.
How has Corona virus affected the continuity of the station?
Due to COVID-19 the continuity of BOOM was effected in many different ways, obviously, we were no longer able to get into the station for our shows or create any of the content that we normally would. Although we were able to pull through as a team with many of us stepping up to create live streams on our Facebook page, Announcers taking over the Instagram for a day and using our website to make articles about things that we thought our audience would like.
What made you want to study and work in radio and what are your goals in the industry?
Growing up I had always had a passion for anything creatively inclined, spending most of my childhood learning Instruments, partaking in drama classes and putting on dance recitals in my living room! Although as a teenager it was something that I loved but never thought I would act on, thinking that I would most likely end up in an everyday office job.
Although things change in my last year of High school after a series of unfortunate events I finally got the wake-up call that I needed! I had always loved listening to the radio on long car rides and it’s always been a part of some of my favourite memories.
When I first decided to pursue radio as a career my goal was to be apart of the background helping organising events, sourcing Interviews and being a part of something bigger than myself. After being in this course for over a year now my goals in a way haven’t changed but expanded with more of a focus on not just being behind the scene but also having fun on-air and being the voice that you hear in the morning.

Catching up with Tanaya Harper
“A few people even asked me if I’m a part of a greater conspiracy – I can tell you that I am not.”
Tanaya Harper is an indie/rock artist who started out in 2017 gigging around the local Perth music scene. Tanaya constructs beautiful vocal melodies and lyrics based around mental health, psychology and relationships to create her tunes.
Since starting out in 2017, Tanaya has accomplished an incredible amount as a musician. Along with supporting the likes of Stella Donnelly, Alex the Astronaut and Abbe May, Tanaya has also recently started working with Walking Horse Music, a management business owned by Matthew Johnson, who also teaches the Music Business course at NMTAFE Leederville.
A big thank you to Tanaya for chatting with us, we are super excited to see where the world decides to take her and her stunning music next!
Congratulations on your new EP – ‘Slow Motion Breakup’ – how did the release go? Was there anything changed about your promotional plan because of COVID 19?
The release went really well thank you! It was released literally in the week of all the venue restrictions taking place in Perth, so there was lots of online sharing of the track ‘Don’t Go Outside’ in particular, haha. A few people even asked me if I’m a part of a greater conspiracy – I can tell you that I am not.
Well, as the EP came out we’d been a month and a half deep in promoting the EP Launch at Badlands on April 3. It had already been stressful trying to make as many pre-sales as possible, making sure people know about it through multiple different marketing points, hoping that a really popular band doesn’t have a launch on the same night. There’s all these little stressors that I actually really dislike about the music industry. It becomes less about the music and all about the numbers which you have no control over. So anyway, a few weeks out from the launch we realised we’d have to cancel the EP Launch, but I didn’t feel angry or anything. That’s life, things are going to be out of your control – more than anything I was just SO happy to have the EP out. It means a lot to me and I didn’t want to hold onto any longer.
How did you find your experience with the Isolaid Festival?
Isolaid was really fun! It’s also super weird playing to your iPhone! I’m big on interacting with a crowd: telling stories, friendly banter, jokes here and there. I think my true crazy is apparent when people are watching from their bedrooms as I’m just cracking jokes to myself. It was also a massive honour to be on a line-up with prolific Australian artists, like Paul Dempsey, wtf? and then also International artists too! The Weather Station was before me, she was beautiful.
What have you been doing to keep yourself occupied during isolation? (both musically and otherwise)
Well, I thought I’d be writing a tonne of music, but I’ll admit I haven’t been very musical at all. I mean, I sing about feeding the cats and brushing my hair while I’m doing those things, but I haven’t actually sat down in a structured way and consciously written much music much at all. I do have one song that I’m slowly putting together, but outside of that we just finished all of Better Caul Saul (dying for the next series), various films and documentaries, re-entering a vegetarian lifestyle, playing Cluedo with my boyfriend, spending lots of time in bed with my two cats, reading books. I haven’t drank since November, and I actually don’t find it hard when I’m at gigs because buying alcohol out of the house
is so expensive, BUT, cooking at home has made not drinking SO much harder! I’ve also gradually started planting native flora in the garden – I want to attract native birds and bees to the house.
How did you come to work with Walking Horse Music?
I’ve been with WHM since around the middle of 2019. It was a long journey. I’ve known Matt Johnson for a few years – I met him through Ali Flintoff (BOAT SHOW, Dream Rimmy, Denise Le Menice) while Bells Rapids was often playing on line-ups with her. Matt and I would have chats here and there about the different songs of bands we loved – there was a common understanding between us of a very particular sound we both love. I asked him quite a few times if he’d like to manage me, but he had a consistently full roster so the timing wasn’t right. Side-note: I don’t know how Managers do it! Just managing one artist is SO much work – let alone multiple! Anyway, so I never left Matt alone, I guess I was like that devious salesman, always there reminding him that I’m still interested haha! I showed him Slow Motion Breakup at the start of last year and we gradually became an official team once his rostered eased a bit.
What gives you inspiration for your music? Is there anything you particularly like writing about?
I mostly like writing about the human experience and interpersonal relationships and/or psychology. The mental/emotional/spiritual journey.
I’m not writing literally about psychology, but more about how our minds shape the world we live in and the relationships that we have.
Self-awareness is something I strive for, yet I feel so far away from it, so perhaps I don’t realise that I’m writing about the human struggle of a mind at ease? Who knows hey…I’ll stop now before this becomes the ramble of all rambles.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
I think I just try my hardest to be kind to myself and to remind myself of the OTHER things I like outside of music. Sometimes it feels like music is all I’m good at and that when I’m not doing it, I must be a failure and a fraud. That’s such a horrible way to think about myself, but it’s also very insidious and strong. I think learning is the best way to deal with a blockage. Just fill your mind with new things that you will ponder over days/weeks/months, and eventually it will solidify within you as a new belief you might have, as vague as that sounds, and one day you’ll appropriate it to a song you start writing.
Tell us 3 fun, random facts about yourself
Hmmmmmmmmm…….
1. I’m deaf in my left ear
2. Sometimes I look my cat Larry in the eye, and I see myself, and I wonder if my soul is fragmented and part of it lives within Larry
3. I want to marry Louis Theroux
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
A few years ago, before I released Some Kinds, I served Abby May at a Bookstore I used to work at. We got talking about our current music plans and I said how it was taking a while and I was getting frustrated. She told me that you can make a plan, but that plan is not THE plan, it’s just a rough outline that allows for you to have something to work towards. The project will be ready when it’s ready, not
when I want it to be. It won’t be ready because I wrote in my diary the day it will be finished. I’ve really held onto that, because it’s true!
Do you have any exciting upcoming plans you can share with us?
Music wise? Well I have 4 new songs recorded and ready to go for release – so Matt and I aren’t too sure just yet what to do. If a gig launch of Slow Mo isn’t possible for a long time, then should we just move onto the next thing?
I do have a music video for Shit Talker I’m yet to release – so keep your eyes peeled for that! Matt Pitcher and I filmed it on Super 8 footage at The Royal Show last year!
No date is set, but the moment intrastate borders open I’ll be driving down south that same day to see my Mum in Albany. I miss her so much.

Making It Rain – with Live Streaming
With live streaming reaching its peak in usage at the moment, monetising them has become an easy and respectable way for performers to make money during this time.
Ways to create revenue from a live stream include
• Viewer Donations
Encouraging donations on your stream can create great revenue depending on the size of your following. Live streaming platforms have integrated donation systems making it easy for viewers to gesture a donation to the performers.
• Subscription/pay per view
This method of monetisation is appealing to viewers as it’s exclusive to paying members. For the streams to be paid they need to be unique. This can include ideas such as live q&a’s or special events. As it is recurring revenue, this is probably the best way to make the most money from your streams.
• Brand deals and sponsorships
Collaborating with a brand within your niche creates great revenue opportunities. For example, naming rights and shout outs during your live stream, subtle advertising of products and services (instead of ad breaks throughout) will all be beneficial. Profit you can make depends on the specific deal with the brand as well as the size of your following.
Although artists aren’t able to perform live in venues at the moment, it’s exciting to see a new way of performing being curated online. These platforms are actively developing new ways to support musicians through this tough time.
